Atlantic Romanesque Restoration Plan
The Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the Regional Government (Junta) of Castile and León and the IBERDROLA Foundation have entered into an agreement to carry out an ambitious project of restoration and maintenance on the Romanesque art heritage in Portugal and Spain. It applies to 33 monuments located in the vicinity of the rivers Douro and Tâmega.
This joint intervention initiative, which goes by the name "Atlantic Romanesque Restoration Plan" will enable to restore the cultural, natural and social heritage of this region, boost socio-economic activity and strengthen cross border ties between Spain and Portugal. The investment will amount to EUR 4.5 million, with each party undertaking a third of the total amount. This contribution will be made in the following four years and it will enable the complete restoration of 12 buildings, as well as the implementation of a maintenance, lighting and control programme at the remaining 21 monuments. Of the 33 churches to benefit from this project, nine are located in the province of Zamora, seven in the district of Vila Real, six in Oporto, six in the province of Salamanca and five in the district of Bragança. Santa María La Real, a benchmark institution in the field of Romanesque art restoration, will take part in the stages of design and execution of the work.
To quote the Chairman of IBERDROLA,"this initiative intensifies the strong commitment that the company has towards Portugal, a country with which we share a future filled with important projects".
